The Gloster Gladiator was an innovative aeroplane and is often described as the pinnacle of biplane fighter design. It was the pride of the Royal Air Force when the first examples were delivered to No.72 Squadron at Tangmere in February 1937. After the Battle of France they were mainly withdrawn to secondary roles. However one RAF squadron did use the Gladiator during the Battle of Britain and they were sent to to protect the naval dockyards at Devonport operating out of Roborough airfield.
